Beautitudes - Food and Clothes
Mt 6: 25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? "
To understand what our Lord is alluding to we need to understand why He says 'is not LIFE more imporant'. In our modern materialistic lifestlye, food and clothing dictate so much of our life's dynamics where food is representative of the physical indulgences and clothing the material extravagences which make us feel good. We earn money through our job so that we can be more comfortable eat costlier and more exotic foods adorn outfits which make us feel good.
In the whole of this process, man has finally forgotten that LIFE is more important than physical indugences or materialistic extravagances. What is this LIFE that God is talking about? I think that is what he is trying to explain in the following verses.
Mat 6:26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Life to the birds of the air have a beauty inherent in them as created by God, to them life is about enjoying that inherent beauty. Yes, birds too eat food, build their nests, but that is a small fraction of time they spend in living a life. But human beings have make their life so complex that all they want to enjoy is the artificiality of food and dresses, they do not know what is is to enjoy LIFE as created by God. God created so much inherent beauty in human life for man to enjoy - the ability for words, language and so literature, the ability for colour, strokes and so painting, that ability for voice, harmony and so music, that ability for thought, ideas and so philosophy, the ability for love, children and so FAMILY - the ability for LIFE. Above all, the ability to get close to God. God has given man Himself as the gift to LIFE.
Matt 6:31 So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. Mat 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
The choice for the modern man is to live life by materialistic inclinations or by God's calling to LIFE. If he goes by the first path He'll have to, like the pagans, live in perpetual worry about their material hoardings.
Man has left all of that which God created for LIFE to be enjoyed and has got himself sold out to one vocation which is to make money, hoard money and then spend it on physical indulgnces and material extravagance. To seek God's Kingdom and His righteousness is to seek to live life God's way where LIFE is lived to all its FULLNESS rather than man's.
